Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Board Certified Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons

At New York’s Facial, Plastic, Reconstructive and Laser Surgery , we know that the eyes are the most captivating feature of your face and are often called the “window to your soul.” As we age, the skin above our eyes droops or sags over time, either making one look old and tired, or possibly even impairing your ability to see. Blepharoplasty, or an upper and lower eyelid lift, is a procedure to surgically remove excess skin or fat above and below the eyes. This eliminates the tired or “hooded” effect that develops over the eyes with age. Eyelid surgery can restore your youthful appearance, making you look rested and years younger.

Who is a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty?
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are healthy men and women who do not suffer from any pre-existing eye conditions. Patients with thyroid gland disorders may not qualify for eyelid surgery due to the increased risk of swelling and other problems around the eyes. Eyelid surgery is perfect for patients of any ethnicity who are seeking to reduce the appearance of aging around their eyes. Most often, candidates are patients whose vision becomes limited due to drooping skin of the upper eyelids. These patients are often told they “look tired” or “look angry” even when they are not.

What is the Recovery like from Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is performed in the office using local anesthesia or under moderate sedation in an operating room. Small incisions are made in the natural creases of your upper eyelids. Your surgeon then carefully removes excess fat and skin from the upper and lower eyelids. The incisions are closed and the scars become invisible, healing in the natural creases of the eye.

Blepharoplasty is often accomplished in an outpatient setting. Most patients return home after only a few hours. Recovery is usually one to two weeks, at which time patients may return to work and non-strenuous activities. Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common the first week or two after surgery. Most patients feel confident returning to their public and social lives in 7-10 days. Our experienced surgeons reduce bruising and recovery time with the application of state-of-art techniques and the use of homeopathic or herbal options. Detailed postoperative and aftercare instructions will be provided to each patient.

Those patients considering eyelid surgery should carefully evaluate their surgeon’s credentials and training. Our doctors are Board Certified, with extensive knowledge to deliver the best cosmetic results while safeguarding your vision.
