Loose and sagging skin in the area of the inner and outer thighs is often caused by weight loss from diet, exercise or bariatric surgery and can make some people self-conscious about their legs. Patients may avoid wearing shorts or bathing suits, or have a difficult time finding clothes that fit correctly. In addition to making some people feel unattractive, excess skin around the thighs can cause uncomfortable rubbing and chafing that can lead to rashes, sores and even infections. The truth is that no matter how hard you’ve worked to lose weight and get into shape, when stretched skin loses its elasticity, diet and exercise can’t eliminate the extra, hanging skin.
A thighplasty is performed to remove the excess skin and fat from the upper legs. Your surgeon then removes this tissue to create a taut and firm leg contour. The thighs will be sculpted to achieve a more toned appearance.
Thigh lifts are conducted on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. In a medial thigh lift (inner thigh lift), the surgical incision is made in the inner thigh along the line where the leg meets the groin. In a lateral thigh lift (outer thigh lift), the incision is made from the groin around the back of the body, so that the buttocks are lifted along with the thigh.
The skin is carefully separated from the underlying muscle and tissue. Excess skin is removed. If needed, liposuction may be used to remove excess fat. The remaining skin is stretched and tightened over the area and sutured closed. The surgery takes between 2 and 3 hours. Drainage tubes may be inserted to help remove excess fluid for the first two days.
A dressing and light compression garment will also be applied following the surgery and must be worn for a few days. Swelling and bruising are common and subside over a few weeks. Most patients are back to work in about 1-2 weeks and resume most normal activity within 3 weeks.
